You did a great post here Grace. I have a bad experience in traveling abroad, I lost my wallet in a hotel room and I am sure I left my wallet in a hotel room. When I came back and ask the staff, they say they didn’t saw any wallet there.
My advice is to make sure you will put all your belongings in a bag with a padlock. When you use your cellphone or check your money in your wallet, make sure before you sleep or before you go to bath room, all things are in one container, in your bag!
